Expected Impacts

NENU2PHAR will actively contribute to the structuration of sustainable bioeconomy value chains in Europe. Projects’ impacts are in line with the BBI-JU roadmap: the SIRA, which sets out the main technological and innovation challenges to developing sustainable and competitive bio-based industries in Europe.

NENU2PHAR’s impacts are expected to contribute also to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations (UN). NENU2PHAR impacts report a contribution to the SDG9 “Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure”, SDG12 “Responsible Consumption & Production” and finally SDG13 “Climate Action”.

Impact Justification
Set the basis for 1 new bio-based value chains

NENU2PHAR will progressively set the foundation to set up a new European value chain of PHA-based bioplastic products from sustainable sourcing.

Validate at least 4 new bio-based materials

NENU2PHAR associate RTO’s, SMEs and Large Industries to move from the validation of the component in the laboratory environment to component validation in a relevant environment of PHA based materials with application in food packaging, cosmetic packaging, 3D printing filament, medical device and agrotextile.

Validate 3 new and improved processing technology

The project will validate:

  • The production of the carbon feedstock from algae biomass at pilot scale
  • The extraction of PHA biopolymer at pilot scale
  • The development of PHA-plastic material corresponding processes allowing the production of a preliminary prototype of high-volume consumer products.

Impact Justification
Increase the environmental sustainability of PHA bioplastic materials

PHA production performed from bacteria biomass avoid competition to agricultural food production and deforestation comparing to current bio-based polymers.

Increase the environmental sustainability of PHA bioplastic materials

Exploring 2 end-of-life scenario:

  • NENU2PHAR’s plastic products will improve the recyclability of the packaging materials by addressing the concept of multi-layered mono-material films
  • PHAs are identified as attractive biodegradable polymers in comparison to several other bio-sourced plastics like PLA or starch.

Increase the overall resource efficiency

NENU2PHAR will promote the development of new saccharide substrate produced from microalgae biomass allowing quality control of the composition and avoiding competition to agricultural food production.

Economic impacts
Impact Justification
Support the implementation of the circular economy in the EU.

NENU2PHAR will participate in the circular economy by designing PHA-based polymers with re-manufacturing in mind. When re-manufacturing is not possible, materials will lend themselves to biodegradation and/or composting, reducing plastic waste.

NENU2PHAR will participate in the PHA market grow. It will support the capacity of production share of sustainable and efficient bio-based materials that could supply the plastic industries in the field of high-volume consumer products.
