The ambition of UBS is to play, in the short term, an even larger role at regional, national and international level in the resolution of current questions linked to material engineering and of the systems used in the industrial sectors related to the packaging, motor industry, energy, aeronautic, health and transport and more particularly all the domains dynamically interacting with the marine environment. As such, UBS amalgamated its complementary forces in Sciences for the Engineer in the Brittany region and became the reference laboratory for mechanical marine systems in France and Europe. Through its numerous industrial collaborations with industrial partners linked to the maritime domain, UBS creates a link between fundamental research, engineering and technology. In effect, the new technological and scientific challenges alongside commercial businesses are numerous: cheaper production, reduction in energy consumption and the environmental footprint, while remaining strong.
The Laboratory of 150 researchers, engineers, PhD, administrative and technical staff is more specifically focused around 2 aims:
- A multi-scale approach to the behaviour of heterogeneous materials,
- Materials, process and sustainable development.
The objective of the UBS is to tie industrial and technological development to sustainable development. Eco-conception of materials, energy savings in industrial processes and numerical simulation are the main focus of the project. More specifically, the aim is to develop the recyclability of materials, develop bio-sourced and biodegradable materials and new materials (metal, polymers, composite, concrete,…). UBS has a state of the art testing and measurement centre at both a national and international level. This requires being equipped with test resources, for measurement and observations covering a large range of scales, from the microstructure to that of a mini-structure. These resources are regrouped by generic themes:
- Characterisation and observation at the nano and microscopic scales,
- Characterisation at a macroscopic scale,
- Development,
- Prototyping,
- design of pilots,
- Software and scientific computing capabilities.
